THE PROJECT
In the future, we want to make travel more holistic and enrich it with a solidarity aspect. That means: vacation + a pinch of “travel realism” + a good deed. To achieve this, we are guided by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 10, combating social inequality in the world. In order to implement our idea in Salzburg, we developed three social vacation activities for Salzburg through an intensive creative process with around 140 participants.
Social Sight
Find out more about Salzburg’s less glamorous side on an interactive postcard wall. Donate on site if you like the idea.
Admire the outdoor artwork Beyond the Postcard on the grounds of Hohensalzburg Fortress. Look behind the facades of the city and learn more about the lives of many people in Salzburg.
If you can, donate €1 to a local social organization that helps Salzburg residents in need.
Where? Hohensalzburg Fortress, passageway at the Marionette Theater
+1€ Ticket & Hotel
Volunteer to support people who are less fortunate at your vacation destination with a small financial contribution.
Are you booking a hotel room in Salzburg or buying a museum ticket?
Voluntarily decide to pay €1 more when paying. It will go directly to a local social institution as your donation.
WORK IN PROGRESS.

COMING SOON.
Why engage?
Like everywhere else in the world, Salzburg also has a less glamorous side. Where some people live well and have a pleasant vacation, others are disadvantaged. We think that this fact needs to be given more attention when traveling in the future. Because what lies behind the postcard idyll is also worth seeing. We call it travel realism.
By looking and acting, you as a traveling guest can change many things for the better:
Raise awareness!
New insights are enriching. Perhaps after visiting our social attraction at Hohensalzburg Fortress, you will have conversations with other people about inequality and poverty. What is it like in your home country, what is it like here, at your vacation spot?
Inspire others!
Inequality is not a law of nature – we can actively do something about it. As a positive role model, you can inspire others. You can do this by using the +1€ hotel booking during your vacation in Salzburg, buying +1€ tickets or sharing our social attraction on social media. #salzburg_beyondthepostcard
Be part of a good swarm!
If we all regularly look beyond the tourist world when on vacation, we will gradually create a more cosmopolitan, solidarity-based travel community. In this way, we feel connected worldwide – wherever we are. Become part of this movement!
Supported associations
Beyond the Postcard is designed as a two-year pilot project. During this period, tourists can leave a small amount of money as a “guest gift” directly at Salzburg’s first social attraction on Hohensalzburg Fortress. This donation goes directly, without deductions and alternates, every six months to local social associations. The larger and smaller associations support important, committed projects, all of which benefit Salzburg residents in need.
CARITAS Salzburg
As a large, Europe-wide known organization, CARITAS Salzburg is the first partner of Beyond the Postcard. The partnership will initially run for six months. All donations received up to that point will go exclusively to selected local Caritas projects in areas such as housing, health, education, culture and social contacts.
